Microsoft Internet Explorer is one of the most widely used programs for browsing the Internet.  If you are new to the Internet, then this tutorial will give you a quick lesson on how to use Internet Explorer.

Web Browsing or Surfing gives you the ability to view websites throughout the world. This is done through a web browser. The most common browser used, is Internet Explorer. A web-page is like the page of a magazine or newspaper, which has pictures and text. To begin, you double click on your desktop icon called Internet Explorer (it looks like the 'e' symbol on the right).

To use Internet Explorer, you need to be connected to the Internet otherwise you will not be able to view any websites. Your computer will prompt you, if you are not already online.

Once opened, it should look like this:


Navigation
These are explained in detail in the next section

Address bar


If you type in a website address into the address field and push ENTER on your keyboard, for example www.altavista.com this takes you through to this web site.

Buttons and links
Basically, if your mouse pointer turns into a hand pointing, then you can click it. This will generally take you to another page or website.

Status bar
Shows what is happening, while your page is downloading, it says "Done" once it is all loaded.

The buttons are described below with an explanation for what each one is for:



Button Description  
  This jumps back to the previous page you were viewing   
  This goes to the page ahead   
  This is used whenever you don't want to wait for the page to load   
  This button re-loads the page in case it didn't quite load correctly the first time   
  This goes back to your home page. Generally our website   
  Allows you to do searches on the Internet   
  This opens a directory of your favorite sites and you can add any site to this as you go along   
  Allows you to view previous sites that you have visited
