DESIGNING YOUR HOMEPAGE Back to top
Designing your first website can be difficult at first, but time and patience will eventually present a satisfactory outcome. Your first obstacle will usually be how you would like your website to look like. The best approach for this dilemma is to approach friends and family who have websites of their own.  Browse the Internet and look at how other people have created their website. In time, you will have a fairly good idea how you would like your website to be structured.

There are really no set rules for how one’s website should look or be structured.  Your imagination is the limit, or the sky, what ever your preference.  However, a good rule of thumb is to make your website easy to read and navigate.  Grouping everything on one page is likely to make it look cluttered. I personally prefer the Zen and Feng Shui approach, lots of space and all things in the right place.

Creating your website is made easy using programs called WYSIWYG (pronounced Wisywig).  This stands for ‘What You See, Is What You Get’.  The following is a list of common WYSIWYG programs, which may already exist on your computer, or you can download them from the Internet.

Once you have created your website, remember to read the tutorial for uploading your website to the Orcon Freehost server.
FRONT PAGE EXPRESS Back to top
The Front Page Express program is a free Microsoft product, provided together with earlier versions of Internet Explorer.  This software is similar to Microsoft Front Page, however there are many extra features missing.  Where Front Page Express is free, you will need to purchase Microsoft Front Page, which is available as either a separate product or together with Microsoft Office.

If you do not have Microsoft Office installed on your computer, you can download a free copy of Front Page Express by clicking here. Simple instructions for using Front Page Express can be found by clicking here.
NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR Back to top
Netscape communicator is also free, and uses a WYSIWYG interface.  The software is integrated together with the Netscape suite, which you can download from Netscape’s website: http://www.netscape.com/
