Why does my modem disconnect?

Keywords: random disconnection, poor throughput

If your modem randomly disconnects from the Internet, and you are experiencing poor throughput, this may be caused by your baud rate being set incorrectly.

Click on Start. Choose Settings, Control Panel, then System. Click on the Device Manager tab. Double-click on Ports (COM & LPT). Now, depending on which COM port your modem is correctly installed on, open that port. By choosing the Port Settings tab, you can set a more efficient baud rate and also turn Data Flow on/off.

If you own a 14.4 or 28.8 modem, the baud rate under Port Settings should be set at 38400. If you own a 33.6 or 56k modem, the baud rate under Port Settings should be set at 57600.
